A look at the future: AC hybrid tech demo with electrified superstructure

The future is electric – we are sure of it, which is why we have already developed a forward-looking tech demo with an electrified superstructure. With this innovative technology platform, we’re showing how Tadano is already laying the foundation for using all options for carbon-neutral crane operation in the future.

Development goal 1: Excellent suitability for real-life use

Here is the special thing about the Tadano hybrid tech demo: The crane is fully functional and completely self-sufficient under all operating conditions thanks to a flexible power supply concept. More specifically, the electric superstructure can run on any of the following three options:

– The integrated battery
_ An external power connection
– A generator on the diesel engine that delivers power for the electric motor

Also worth mentioning: The electrified superstructure design makes it possible to use both 32 A and 63 A connectors when using external power.

Additional advantages: The electric motor’s working speed and delivered lifting capacity are exactly at the same level as those of a diesel engine, not to mention that its sound emissions are much lower under all lifting conditions.

Development goal 2: Competitive benefit–cost ratio

The tech demo achieves a system efficiency of around 85 percent, which is more than double the energy efficiency of an efficient diesel engine. This results in the tech demo having a significantly better carbon footprint, including a CO2 reduction of up to 50 percent when compared to diesel-operated superstructures.

The tech demo also comes with advantages in regard to operating costs:

– The battery and electric motor require much less maintenance than diesel engines with their complex exhaust systems
– The scope of maintenance and servicing training required for electrified superstructures is therefore relatively small
– The crane is controlled the same way as with conventional drives, meaning that no special training is required for this purpose

This means that even though acquisition costs are higher than for a comparable conventional crane, the difference is compensated for over the crane’s lifecycle due to its lower operating costs.

Development goal 3: Heavy-duty and durable battery technology

The battery used also contributes to a positive net result:

– It will still have around 80% of its original rated capacity after 3,000 full charging cycles
– It is impervious to dusty environments and low temperatures

At extremely low temperatures, a thermal management system preheats the battery and continuously keeps it within the ideal temperature range
